Borgata Poker Open -- WPT Season 4

The Borgata Hotel and Casino
September 11 - 22, 2005

Day 1 WPT Event This event had a nice turnout with 515 players entering. Each paid $9,700 + $300 to enter, creating a sizeable prize pool of $4,995,514. First place will pay $1,498,650 to the winner. Some of the players to be seen were 2005 WSOP Champ Joseph Hachem, Erik Seidel, Russell Rosenblum, Steve Zolotow, Kristy Gazes, Alan Goehring, Chris Ferguson who recently won the Las Vegas WSOP circuit tournament event, Clonie Gowen, Kathy Liebert, Chau Giang, Josh Arieh, Erick Lindgren, and Barry Greenstein in attendance at the event. The action started at 11:00 a.m., becoming pretty fierce at some points. By the end of the first day there were 282 players left. A few that did not make the cut were Ted Forrest, Andy Bloch, Mel Judah, Jennifer Tilly along with her boyfriend Phil Laak, Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Ivey. Here are the top 6 players and chip counts:
  1. Tom Coan 279,800
  2. David Benyamine 146,100
  3. Steve Danneman 121,000
  4. Jason Lux 118,700
  5. Luke Chung 107,600
  6. Ross Mallor 106,800

Day 2 WPT Event 282 players began the 2nd round of action at 11:00 a.m. on Day 2. The eliminations began quickly as Chris Ferguson went out within the first 20 minutes when the A K he held lost to an opponents A 9 on the river. Other players going to the sidelines include Michael Gracz, Quinn Do, Tim Phan, Cyndy Violette, Carlos Mortensen, Erik Seidel, Allen Cunningham, Jean Robert Bellande and Bob Stupak. But some players excelled such as Josh Arieh who came in 3rd last year in this tournament, David Pham, Luke Chung and Franklin Cauldwell. When the dust settled, there were 62 players left that will continue on to Day 3. Here are the top 6 players and their chip counts:

  1. Dee Caldwell -- 485,000
  2. Mike "The Mouth" Matusow -- 472,500
  3. John D'Agostino -- 471,000
  4. David "The Dragon" Pham -- 355,500
  5. Robert Hwang -- 339,500
  6. Tom Coan -- 335,500

Day 3 WPT Event 62 players really went at it on Day 3, fighting their way down to 6 for the final table. After seven players were sent home in the first 25 minutes, things slowed down because only the top 45 would end up in the money. When the bubble broke the action got hot again. Kathy Liebert put in a strong performance doubling up and took lots of big pots. Clonie Gowan sent Josh Arieh home in 41st place ($12,489), but was eventually eliminated in 31st position ($14,987). And John D'Agostino was on fire increasing his chip count from Day 2's 471,000 up to 2,295,000! When it got down to 7 players, J.C. Tran was out in 7th place ($199,820) after his pocket Q's lost in a 3 way pot with John D'Agostino and Al Ardebili. Here are the final table players:

  1. David Singer -- 3,200,000
  2. John D'Agostino -- 2,295,000
  3. Robert Hwang -- 1,795,000
  4. Al Ardebili -- 1,425,000
  5. Kathy Liebert -- 1,045,000
  6. Ricardo Festejo -- 540,000

Day 4 WPT Event Al Ardebili is the winner of this tournament, taking home $1,498,650 for the effort. It was a surprise of events with Day 3 chip leader David Singer leaving the table in 6th place. Kathy Liebert reflected sage wisdom in her play picking and choosing her battles resulting in her winning big pots. Also after the money presentation before the heads duel up between Al Ardebili and Ricardo Festejo, Al decided to take some of the money on the table and throw it into the crowd! WPT was not as excited as the audience was, but it wasn't too bad as the money is fake anyway. Here are the final table player results:

  1. Al Ardebili -- $1,498,650
  2. Ricardo Festejo -- $799,280
  3. Kathy Liebert -- $427,115
  4. John D'Agostino -- $349,685
  5. Robert Hwang -- $299,730
  6. David Singer -- $249,775
